This week, we check out a super smart dashboard cam, potential Facebook changes, Instagram’s new Type Mode, exciting Nintendo News & Google Flight’s new machine learning feature.
February is here, and so is the Super Bowl. Load up on snacks, grab some tall cans, and settle in for a little bit of football, a lot of crazy commercials, and of course, some Weekly Wins. Cheers!
1. Dash Cam Deluxe
Don’t you hate it when a giant rubber duck drives by and you don’t have your camera out? A new startup co-founded by Andy Hodge, one of the original iPod developers for Apple, is making super smart dashboard camera called Owl. From recording video on the inside and outside of your vehicle to alerting you of fender benders and break-ins, Owl does it all.
The device has a camera on both the front and back, so you can film your very own carpool karaoke and record events that happen on the road like accidents and traffic stops (and giant inflatable birds). Owl also comes with built-in LTE connections so it can communicate with your phone and alert you of (and scare off) burglars trying to break into your car, or hit and runs that happen while your vehicle’s parked. Check out this list for a full breakdown of all the things this handy cam can do.
2. News Feed No More?
Stories has been growing in popularity on Instagram, and Facebook may be looking to follow suit. Mark Zuckerberg shared, “Another important shift that we’re seeing across the industry is the growth of Stories. We expect Stories are on track to overtake posts in Feed as the most common way that people share across all social apps. That’s because Stories is a better format for sharing multiple quick video clips throughout your day.”
That sounds a lot like Facebook may soon be a platform that focuses on stories from your friends, rather than a fun collection of random videos and memes. It would be an interesting move for Facebook to follow the crowd and do what other platforms are doing rather than continuing to pave the way for something new and different. Stay tuned. If any major changes occur, you can be sure we’ll cover them in the Weekly Wins.
3. Hello Type Mode
Speaking of Stories, Instagram continues to add to their list of customizable offerings, putting the power in the hands of creators. Last week, they brought us GIFs. This week, Instagram rolled out a brand new feature called “Type Mode” that lets you add text-only pages to your stories. The days of taking 20 minutes to colour in the background are gone, and an array of colourful backgrounds and fun text styles are here. We’ve already played around with this feature in our own Insta Story. Check it out.
4. Big Nintendo News
Ah, Mario Kart. The game that causes friends to scream at one another and fight over who gets to be Yoshi brings people together. If you’re a fan of racing down Rainbow Road, you’ll love this: Nintendo announced Mario Kart Tour, a Mario Kart mobile app set for release sometime in the next year.
Nintendo also announced that a “Super Mario” movie is finally happening. The CEO shared that he would love for the beloved characters like Mario, Luigi, and Princess Peach to come to the big screen back in 2016, and now it’s official. We just have to wait until earliest 2020 for it to come to theatres.
5. Google’s In-The-Know
Google is now using machine learning to predict flight delays. Google’s Flight app has been updated with new features that will help travellers plan ahead by notifying them when delays are expected.
It works by using historical data and looking for common patterns related to flight delays, including factors like location and weather, then making predictions before they’re announced. Google explained that delays will only be flagged when they’re 80% confident in their prediction, but those are some pretty good odds. Thanks, Google.
